Spring - Summer Newsletter

To: Lions Peak’s Family of Friends

Lions Peak Vineyard has had an excellent start this 2012 year. The vineyard home is still in the process of transformation. The rose gardens have grown. Since last April we have planted over 150 roses and added lavender, jasmine, and olive trees to the surrounding grounds by the vineyard house. It has proven to be quite an undertaking to restore the house and surrounding grounds.

The Lions Peak Vineyard House and surrounding vineyard represents 40 years of dreams. From the dream, the creation has become manifested. When you stand out on the veranda and view the vines that drape the hillside, it is an experience that is truly awesome. The views are spectacular this time of the year and not to be missed! The vines are in the process of being pruned and the canes tied. We are anxiously awaiting bud break! The vineyard is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the wonders of creation. So often we lose sight of the simplicity of life.

SOLVANG LEGACY CONTINUES

Lions Peak Tasting Room has now been at our Solvang location for (8) eight years. It is amazing how time seems to pass by so rapidly. The 2012-year beginning has proven to be exciting one. Our Valentine weekend was fantastic, and President’s Day weekend followed with an overflow of guests. We want to continue to express our gratitude to all of our club members for making Lions Peak’s story one of joy.

LP calendar of events for 2012 is exciting. On Saturday afternoons, from 3:00 PM until 7:30PM we are having an afternoon and early evening of eclectic music and the diverse DJ selections from JSH Productions. As part of our special events, Lions Peak is also planning to have wine and chocolate pairings, wine and cheese pairings, and open house events. Please look for emails that will provide you with the details of each event.

Our Solvang Tasting Room is opened seven days a week with extended hours on weekends and for special events. Lions Peak Spring Calendar returns with weekday hours returning to 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. We invite you to have a Premium or VIP tasting, or try our new added feature…Lions Peak Wine by the Glass! We are here to serve you and ensure that you leave with new knowledge of both wine and food pairings. We invite you to call or email us with any of your questions regarding wine and food pairings.

TASTE OF SOLVANG

The annual Taste of Solvang weekend was Lions Peak’s kickoff for the arrival of the spring season. Friday evening featured a wonderful array of desserts from restaurants, chocolate confectionaries, and other merchants. The desserts were paired with wines from Solvang wine tasting rooms and wine shops. Lions Peak served our tasters our wonderful Late Harvest Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon Port, Marsanne, and our Estate Cabernet. Live music and dancing was an added feature, enjoyed by all.

The weekend continued with a number of special events. Lions Peak joined other wineries and wine shops on Saturday and Sunday for tasting. We had a great time….welcomed all our guests with a diverse collection of LP wines.

LIONS PEAK AT VIOGNIER SYMPOSIUM

We want to express our appreciation and gratitude to the State of Texas for inviting us to speak at the Viognier Symposium. The Symposium began on the history of Viognier, which was presented by a sommelier. The through education of the Viognier grape provided all with an in-depth understanding of the Viognier grape. The strengths and weaknesses of Viognier were thoroughly discussed, as well as, macro and micro climates requirements, soil and rootstocks, and harvest considerations. The panel discussion looked at Viognier wine as a standalone or blend, and wine styles recommendations were part of the overview of the topic of winemaking.

Prior to the beginning of the Symposium Brennan Vineyards graciously hosted a dinner that Lions Peak was pleased to be a part. Lions Peak was honored to represent California and discuss our Viognier, Late Harvest Viognier, Lulu and our Rhone Blends. On a side bar, it was good to be back in Texas!

OPEN HOUSE

Mark your calendar for Lions Peak Spring Open House during Memorial Weekend, May 25th through May 28th

LP shall be serving barrel samples of our 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, and our Library Cabernet Sauvignons. In addition, great music and complimentary appetizers will accompany the LP wines. The open house will be from the time we open until closing all week.

Dear Family of Friends,

We are starting the final countdown until the 2011 harvest. The grapes are at 16 degrees Brix and need to reach 24 degrees before we harvest so we still have at least for to six weeks until the 2011 Vintage is picked, crushed, and in the fermentation tanks!

It has been 20 years since Lions Peak was purchased, and 40 years since the inception of the vineyard. During this time of year is always a time to reflect on the history of the vineyard and Lions Peak Wines.

As growers first, it was of paramount importance to focus on the quality of the grapes that were produced. The wine business is a lot of hard work that begins in the vineyard. No matter how glamorous the media tries to make having a vineyard — It is farming with the fringe benefits of having the opportunity to produce fine wines. What is not said when you open that Ultra Premium bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon is the labor that is involved. Our LP old vine Cabernet Sauvignon has been nurtured for over forty (40) years. Pruning, soil amendments, irrigation, harvesting at the appropriate times to barrel and bottle aging the wine are some of the steps that Lions Peak takes to produce our award winning wines.

Historically, the first Lions Peak Wine began in 1992 with a ton of grapes that were hand harvested and trucked by the owners of Lions Peak in a pickup truck to the Poalillo Vineyard in Paso Robles. The grapes were divided between the Poalillo Vineyard and Lions Peak and so the story began…the grapes…the crush….the barrel aging… then the first wine…

This was truly how it all began… personally hand harvesting the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and filling the bucket and trays with the beautiful fruit…So many years ago and yet the memory is so fresh and truly the sheer essence of wine growing and making…smelling the fragrance of the earth!

So that was then and here we are today nearly twenty years after the first wine was made. Now a legacy of fine award winning boutique wine that began with a causal trip up the coast which ended in Paso Robles. Fate waived its magic wand, and we were destined to visit this quaint little town because all the coastal hotels were booked. Funny how life is, you take one road and your entire life changes.

BIRTHDAY PARTY GOING TO HAVE A GOOD TIME NOVEMBER 12th

We invite you for a Saturday open house to celebrate Jenn’s Birthday. JH Productions will be there for a Day with the Beatles. From the original Beatles releases to remembering John Lennon…Paul…and George. We shall have wine and cheese pairing with assorted fruit. So mark the date of Saturday November12th. A special birthday cake from Canters in West Hollywood will be paired with the LP Cabernet Port. The cake is layers of dark chocolate with pineapple and cherries…named Racetrack

2011 FALL/WINTER CLUB SELECTIONS

Our current wine selections offer diversity with each club. Each collection has diversity and the holiday collection is a prize to cherish with the Library Wines and the Champagne! Included in our wine club collections is our 2008 Proprietor’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon which provides you with a wine that offers four of the Bordeaux grape varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. This wine is the first LP release of a Proprietor’s Reserve which exhibits the complexity of these four varietals. Barrel aged in 100% French Oak, the wine has layers of complexity, smooth tannins, and a lingering finish on the palette. This Cabernet Reserve was a limited produced wine; therefore, we highly recommend purchasing more to lay down and cellar.

The Connoisseurs Collection includes (3) Rhone wines, (1) blend of Rhone and Bordeaux varietals, and (2) Bordeaux wines. With this collection LP wants to provide you with an assortment of wines. With the diversity of these wines, to have a selection for wine and food pairing is as easy as preparing that special menu and selecting one of the LP wines.

The Premium and Roaring Cabernet offers you a complete selection of Bordeaux wines that ranges from our 1997 Library wine to the current 2007 Roaring Lion Cabernet Sauvignon. You will personally have the opportunity to taste and hold in your memory the longevity of the LP Cabernet Sauvignon.

5 Stars

Stumbled across this tasting room while enjoying a candy Apple from next door and was pleasantly surprised by the great wine, friendly staff, and nice vibe. Mellonie at the bar poured some nice wines and her favorite blend in a glass which was wonderful. We commented on the good music only to learn that that too was Mellonie! Good wines.. good times. – David M.

We randomly chose Lion’s Peak on as we passed Solvang and headed to SLO. Our indiscriminate selection for wine tasting couldn’t be any better. The guy behind the counter was well rounded and was knowledgeable on his wine. It was a wine connoisseur’s playing field. For $15 we were able to select our own 6 tastings. The tastings were not only generously poured but we definitely got more than 6.

We absolutely LOVED their reds. We will be joining the wine club. The exclusivity, the fantastic service and delicious wine were beyond amazing! – Joanna

This place came recommended on our full day of wine tasting. The Sommelier was a Frenchman that not only knew his wine, but knew his wine pairings as well.

We started with the white wine sampler enjoying the Viognier, Chardonnay and ended with the Marsanne. We are not white wine drinkers. However, this flavors simply burst in your mouth. Hints of butterscotch, slight oak, berries, and apricots. It was so good we joined the wine club. Great find!!! – Eugene B.

5 Stars

We were out there on Saturday April 2nd. I was a member of the winery several years ago but had to quit one of about seven I belonged too. Their wines are well made and tasty. Their line up is large, with whites, blends, and traditional’s like cabernet and zinfandel. Often they have specials for all guests and I took advantage of this opportunity. I purchased a case of their delicious PORT wine for 120.00. What a great PRICE. Other specials included their cabernet and Viognier, same price. The staff is friendly and attentive. The tasting room is comfortable with great art, wine trinkets, and of course great WINES. We’ll certainly continue to make it a stop for us. – Javier G.

5 Stars

Surprisingly excellent, very dense and oaky red wines in a tasting room at the edge of a strange little tourist town. This is heavy-duty stuff. $10 for a rather austere tasting. The taciturn but passionate owner, who also runs the tasting room, is the spitting image of Hollywood Squares stalwart Soupy Sales. If that’s not worth five stars, what is? – Gil S.

5 Stars

Accidental discoveries are often the most pleasant – and that’s what this place turned out to be for us!

We were strolling through Solvang on vacation (on my birthday.. weee!), having re-visited the Lucas & Lewllen tasting room for a bit of a refresher tasting of their wines. We’d visited a few shops when my wifey spots some nice glass displays in the window of the Lion’s Peak Winery tasting room.

Sooooo we slipped inside and looked around. We were the only ones there, along with the wine pourer – Damien (I hope this spelling is correct!). He asked us if we’d like to do a tasting. I said sure…why not?

What followed was an hour of pure delight!

Our tasting consisted of 2 whites, 3 reds and 1 port – for $10 each. Not bad. The wines themselves were very good. My wife and I lean more towards white wines. In fact it takes a very special red wine to really get past my wife’s palate intact.

Turns out all three of the reds we had were very approachable, all very pleasant to both of us – and we even took home a bottle of their Cab Sauv Reserve…the wife liked that one the most!

Their Port was also yummy and was snatched up!

But what really made the experience was Damien. He explained each wine and what to expect taste wise. He was very knowledgeable, especially when it came to what food each wine would pair with. Turns out he’s a trained chef and has been a sous-chef for a rather well-known local restaurant.

We had such a wonderful time discussing wine, food, travel and all kinds of things wine-related. By the time we were done – and hour had passed – a very delightful hour.

This is one of the few wineries that we’ve seriously considered joining their wine club. The experience was that good for us. We’ll certainly come back if we’re in the area again. – Wayne W.

4 Stars

I really like coming here. I’ve been here a few times now and always have really good wine. The location is right on Copenhagen Dr. so you can’t miss it.

The Sommelier there are knowledgeable and very sweet. They try to be as attentive as possible and remember where you are on your tasting. They do get very busy so sometimes it is hard and you have to wait a little while for your next tasting.

For $15 you can have 6 tastings and get to keep the glass. They will also do glass and half glass pouring there too if you find something you really like.

They do have a wine club that varies in cost but the nice thing is that they don’t pressure you to join. Some places do and follow you around with an order form.

They had some great white wines while I was up there a few weeks ago and their Roaring Lion Cabernet was a particular favorite of my boyfriend. I enjoyed it as well even though I don’t particularly like Reds. My favorite white is “The Sisters” which wasn’t too sweet or too overpowering in flavor.

I will keep coming back here. – Sarah L.

4 Stars

Randomly chose Lion’s Peak over L&L tasting room because we only had enough time for one. It was nice and cool inside and the lady generously poured us way more than 6 tastings. She had no problem with us creating our own tasting menu and even gave us a taste of the port. Since it was lunchtime she opened some fancy marinated olives and set out crackers and cookies.

We scored a nice white that had these amazing fruit flavors. We decided to save it for a very special occasion. I’d definitely recommend stopping here, but since it’s 2 doors down from L&L why not take your time and go to both? – Elite ’11

With the location of Lions Peak Tasting Room being in the heart of Solvang, there’s no need to close up before the day is over. Situated between restaurants and shops, this tasting room stays open until 7 p.m. … so there’s no reason to rush in or out. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, Lions Peak stays open until 9 p.m. It’s the perfect place to stop by to relax and unwind with a glass of wine and complementary hors d’oeuvres and often times meet owner/winemaker, Jennifer Arant. The entertainment venues vary with live music or assorted DJ music. Be warned, if you plan to drop in for a minute, you may find it hard to leave. Jennifer and her staff enjoy talking to you about Lions Peak wines, music, arts, cuisine and would also love to hear about the adventures of your life. “We invite you to have a premium or reserve tasting or try our Lions Peak wine by the glass. We are here to serve you and ensure that you have a great time!”

Lions Peak Estate is located in the rolling hills of California’s Central Coast where the fog and afternoon breezes provide ideal growing condi- tions for ripening grapes. The vineyard is renowned for a terroir that produces top quality grapes and some of the finest wines in the world. The Central Coast offers Lions Peak the opportunity to create wines of diversity with the region’s endless range of growing conditions. As a result, the wines stand firm on their own merit and receive recognition for their outstanding craftsmanship.

The family goal at Lions Peak has been to produce exceptionally fine boutique wines and Jennifer has personally been involved in the vineyard, the winery and the tasting room. As an added feature to having an exten- sive knowledge of winemaking, she has traveled to many of the great wine regions of the world; was mentored by Robert Lawrence Balzer (35-year food-and-wine critic for the L.A. Times); attended UC Davis and CalPoly, and has repeatedly won recognition for her wines.

From these diverse experiences, Jennifer has created a portfolio of wines of unusual depth, range and character. Every wine tells a different story to the palette and every label tells a story to the imagination. “We have devel- oped a wine portfolio which wine tasters recognize…Our pride is our wonderful world of Bordeaux, Rhône and speciality wines,” says Jennifer, which Lions Peak has produced, in small handcrafted lots. For us, the highest quality wines require well-contoured land, rich soil, carefully main- tained vines, properly ripened fruit and conscientious follow-through.”

Lions Peak Estate Vineyard, planted in the early ’70s, produces renowned Bordeaux wines which have received gold medals and best-of- class accolades. Lions Peak Cabernet Sauvignon was first released in 1994 from 40-year-old vines – one of the oldest Cabernet vineyards on the Central Coast!

“Service to our clients is our highest priority,” she continues, “and the dedication of the Lions Peak family is to have you taste our diverse selec- tion of boutique wines and become educated in Bordeaux and Rhône wines.” The tasting room, established in the late 1990s, moved to its current location in 2004. “We pride ourselves as one of the pioneer tasting rooms in Santa Ynez Valley,” says Jennifer. Come relax and indulge yourself in a personal wine tasting experience at the tasting room in the historic village of Solvang located at 1659 Copenhagen, Suite A; open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Taste the award-winning wines and discover their uniqueness. “Since the very first vintage of Lions Peak’s boutique wines, our family has continued, with great passion, to share our small-lot, exceptional award- winning wines with old friends and new.” For more information, visit the website at http://www.lionspeakwine.com.

2011 Spring ROAR WITH THE LIONS 2011 Summer

Dear Family of Friends

Lions Peak Vineyard has had an excellent start this 2011 year. The long awaited rains have returned and once again we are blessed with what we called in the early 1990’s the March miracles of abundant rains. The vines are now 42 years old and seeing their beautiful arms draped on the trellis provide one with awe.

The vineyard hillsides are exceptionally green and the views are spectacular this time of the year and not to be missed! The vines have been pruned and the canes tied, and Mother Nature is beginning to wake up all of the vines from their winter rest. To sit out on the veranda and see Mother Nature at work is truly a spiritual experience. The roses are starting to bloom and the lavender is beginning its new season. The vineyard landscape is always a work in progress and the addition of pink jasmine and boxwood surrounds is captivating. Nights are equally extraordinary, and when you view the full moon and see the stars at their full magnitude, hear crickets chirping…. this is what dreams are made of.

Lions Peak Tasting Room has now been at our Solvang location for (7) seven years. It is amazing how time seems to pass by so rapidly. With this being said, the 2011-year is starting off with new beginnings. Our Valentine weekend was fantastic, and it is just the beginning of the events that LP is planning for the 2011 calendar year. From the Taste of Solvang, Easter, Memorial Weekend open house, the 4th of July to the autumn and winter activities, LP is opening our doors for wonderful events.

Our Solvang Tasting Room is open seven days a week with extended hours on the weekends and for special weekend events. Lions Peak Spring Calendar returns with weekday hours of 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM with extended weekend hours.

Mellonie, John “Eric”, Mary, Eric, Peggy ,Jon, and Jennifer will enjoy talking to you about Lions Peak wines, music, arts, cuisine, and would also love to hear about the adventures of your life. We invite you to have a premium or reserve tasting or try our new feature…Lions Peak Wine by the Glass! We are here to serve you and ensure that you have a great time!

TASTE OF SOLVANG

The annual Taste of Solvang weekend was Lions Peak’s kickoff for the arrival of the spring season. Friday evening’s event featured a wonderful array of desserts from restaurants, chocolate confectionaries, and merchants. The desserts were paired with wines from Solvang wine tasting rooms and wine shops. Lions Peak served our wonderful Late Harvest Viognier, Ports, Rose, Chardonnay, and Estate Cabernet. Live music and dancing was an added feature, which was enjoyed by all.

Lions Peak joined other wineries and wine shops on Saturday evening for a special event filled with music, wine, and the opportunity of meeting new friends. We all had a great time….
